It's Not A Matter Of Size, It's A Matter Of Fashion

Plus-size model Crystal Renn, whose name keeps popping up more and more, shows us that it's not a matter of size when it comes to modelling - but fashion. During a photo shoot, Renn (23) posed with slimmer model Jacquelyn Jablonski (17), a slim Calvin Klein Jeans and Proenza Schouler model, during a photo shoot for next month's V magazine.
The stats: both girls are 5-foot-9 with long black hair. Renn weighs in at a curvy size 16, and Jablonski, size not known, so let's say an average size 2 (definitely no more than a 4).
The models dress identical in tribal-inspired outfits, using their personality's to make the difference in each photo. The images were shot by photographer Terry Richardson, and will be used for a series of campaigns for designers and magazines to use models with more varied looks, ages and body shapes.
Renn who has struggled with her weight, and who has openly discussed it in her book "Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves" says,
"I’d love to see [the fashion industry] open their eyes to the variety of women. That variety is what’s beautiful.
'Current sample sizes that models are all expected to fit into are ridiculous – a US size zero or British size 4 is the standard. They should go up to a British size 16.
'I’m not saying all models should be size 16, but bigger dresses can be pinned and adjusted, while tiny size zero clothes can’t really be changed. It means all these models starve themselves, like I did, to fit them."
We still have a long way to go before the fashion and model industry is changed, and in the meantime, we'll keep losing young women to eating disorders. Events like two models dying from anorexia, Ralph Lauren photoshopping a model to look impossibly thin, and Kate Moss' "size zero" motto, are unfortunate - but hopefully steps to point the industries in the right direction.

I've always been a fan of fuller-figured models. There's a great site with many images of Crystal and other plus-size models here: http://www.judgmentofparis.com/ They're all gorgeous. The site's forum also has thought-provoking discussions about body image and the media.
