Malia & Sasha Obama's Lunches Spark School Lunch Debate!

Malia and Sasha Obama probably never expected that what they ate for lunch could spark a debate, but new adverts asking for healthier school lunches bringing the Obama girls’ and what's in their lunch boxes into the discussion.
The adverts, sponsored by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, feature a 14 year old girl asking “President Obama’s daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don't I?" Their purpose, according to the nonprofit organization behind them, is to encourage congress to change the Child Nutrition Act. The changes hoped for are that schools would have to offer more vegetarian and low fat options, as well as more fruit and vegetables.
The 14-year old girl in the adverts isn’t an actor, however. Jasmine Messiah from Miami firmly believes in the message that she is helping to spread. She recently wrote a letter to Malia and Sasha asking them to sign a petition at healthyschoollunches.org for healthier meals at school.
"The problem is that most students eat unhealthy foods, like hot dogs, pepperoni pizza, ham sandwiches and cheeseburgers everyday at school,” she writes. “A lot of schools, including mine, don't offer enough healthy fruits, vegetables and vegetarian meals."
Dr. Neal Barnard, the president of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine thinks that this campaign is not only necessary, but also urgent.
"Childhood obesity is at its worst point ever," he says. "At least one in six children is already overweight and in some geographic areas as much as one in four, and of course that leads to diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and a lot of health care costs when they reach adulthood."
The adverts will be around throughout August, up until the renewal of the Child Nutrition act that the committee hope will be changed.
