Jennie Garth Grows Her Own Vegetables
Monday, March 15th, 2010 @ 10:00am
Health nut Jennie Garth has turned her front lawn into a vegetable garden , so her three daughters can learn all about the benefits of eating organic produce.
The actress, who is married to Twilight star Peter Facinelli, grew up on a farm and she missed being able to garden for her own fruit and vegetables, so she persuaded her husband to let her turn their Hollywood estate into a vegetable garden. The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star, who is also a spokesperson for the American Heart Association, says,
"I lived on a farm and we had a big garden, so gardening and growing our own vegetables was just part of our lives.
"I recently, with my girls, planted a very small garden in our front yard of our city house and I don't really care that everyone can see it because I have to have a garden somewhere and they love it.
"We have lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, sugar snap peas, and strawberries .. The girls love getting dirty and picking vegetables they want to grow every year and watering them and growing them. I let them help me cook them, which puts a different perspective on it.
"I'm not just serving the food to them and forcing them to eat it. They really are invested and they care about what they're eating. Kids like the vegetables when they're raw, actually, and they can dip them into ranch dressing or chocolate; I don't care as long as they're eating their vegetables!"
Amanda Seyfried Is A Raw Food Kind-of-Gal
Monday, March 15th, 2010 @ 7:10am
Amanda Seyfried constantly worries about her weight - because she fears piling on the pounds will cost her movie roles. The 24 year old admits she's not naturally thin and has to work hard to maintain her super-slender frame. And she is always aware that if she lets her body get bigger, her career may suffer - because Hollywood bosses want to cast thin actresses in lead roles. She tells Britain's Glamour magazine,
"If I didn't run and work out, there's no way I would be this thin. But I have to stay in shape because I'm an actress. It's f**ked up and it's twisted, but I wouldn't get the roles otherwise. If I'd been a bit bigger, I don't think they would have cast me for Mamma Mia!"
Check her out looking gorgeous in Esquire's April issue. She tells the mag on keeping her weight off:
“I’m on a raw-food diet. It’s intense. And sort of awful. Yesterday for lunch? Spinach. Just spinach. Spinach and some seeds.”
Book Review: The Mayo Clinic Diet By Samantha Ewers
Saturday, March 13th, 2010 @ 9:00am
I must confess that I am a habitual fad dieter, a consequence of my unhealthy eating habits. I have tried everything from the Atkins Diet to the South Beach Diet. Sure I lost a good amount of weight at first, but it didn’t take long for the weight to reappear, and it was clear that these fad diets weren’t a solution to my lifestyle as a foodie. I’m certainly not overweight, but I’m not exactly wearing my skinny jeans either. So when the opportunity came up to try out the Mayo Clinic Diet for two weeks, I was hopeful yet hesitant. It took me about a week to put down the chicken fingers and honey mustard sauce to finally get in a place where I knew enough was enough. I decided it was time to begin this diet which is designed to help me loose between 6 and 10 pounds in two weeks. The book was obviously written by geniuses, because the authors were able to make the rules as clear and straightforward as possible. Easier than a Dummies book.
TruGreen Encourages Americans to Register Acts of Green for Earth Day 2010
Friday, March 12th, 2010 @ 6:00pm
Touting its new tagline Go greener(SM), TruGreen, the nation's largest professional lawn care service, today launched an initiative to help educate Americans on how unlocking their passion for their lawns can also positively impact the environment. TruGreen is the exclusive U.S. organic and sustainable lawn and landscape care sponsor of Earth Day Network. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010, TruGreen is suggesting to homeowners 10 sustainable lawn care tips at www.earthday.org/action/trugreen that qualify for Earth Day Network's Billion Acts of Green(TM) environmental service initiative.
As part of its sponsorship, TruGreen will participate in Earth Day Network's flagship Earth Day event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on April 25. Free to the public, the event will recognize achievements for mobilizing America to create a green economy.
"Homeowners want to get the most out of their lawns, but often lack the time and expertise to create a lawn they can truly enjoy," said Stephen M. Donly, president and chief operating officer, TruGreen. "At TruGreen, we're not only partnering with homeowners to create a healthy, green lawn that's easy to care for, but we're also helping them do so responsibly."
