Outrageous Diet Trends You Shouldn't Try
Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 @ 2:07pm
There will always be some sort of diet trend, but this one is out of this world and simply outrageous! It's called the Breatharian Diet. Yes, if you guessed correctly, it's a diet based on air! Did you fall off your seat laughing?! Â
This diet is an idea that people can survive only on air - no food and possibly no water. It sounds so extreme I had to look into it, and this is what I found...
Breatharian, also know as Inedia, isan extreme spiritual concept that comes from eastern aestheticism(primarily Hinduism). The concept is that people don't need food, butcan survive entirely on air (or perhaps sunlight or "prana" [lifeforce]). It's not so much a diet as a spiritual lifestyle. In practice, the people who call themselves Breatharian do in fact eat from time totime. Not eating is a kind of goal or spiritual practice. But, forwhatever reason, most Breatharian do eat sometimes.
You know what this reminds me of, The Devil Wears Prada. If you've seen the movie (or not), there's one part where one of the characters, Emily, says,
"I'm on this new diet where I don't eat anything until I feel like I'm about to pass out, then I eat a cube of cheese."
Hey, maybe she was on the Breatharian Diet?!
Health Magazine lists other diet trends you shouldn't try:

Food Imposters
Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 @ 9:13am
When reaching for diet soda, baked potato chips, low-fat cookies, light ice cream, etc. - you may think you're making healthier choices, but in fact these foods are impostors disguised in an "aura of health."Â Janel Ovrut, MS, RD, a Boston-based dietitian, saysÂ
"From a distance, some foods seem like healthful choices because of the way they're packaged or labeled."
I feel like such a fool!...OK, I'm being overdramatic, but it's like we can't trust any food package when it comes to choosing a healthier choice, there seems to always be some type of catch. I've also been told that it's better to eat the real stuff, just in proportion and in moderation, than choose something low-fat, low-calorie, fat-free. However, the choice is yours, and the below information probably won't stop me from eating a bag of Baked Lays, but I will definitely take the following advice into consideration.  Â
Baked potato chips Yes, they're lower in fat. But they're still high in calories and low in nutrients, with little fiber to fill you up.
Smarter sub: Popcorn. You'll get the salt and crunch of chips plus fiber, and around 65 percent fewer calories per cup. Look for oil-free microwave popcorn or brands that are air-popped or popped in healthful oils such as olive or canola.

Alanis Morisette: Would You Recognize Her?
Friday, January 2nd, 2009 @ 3:15pm
I don't even know what to say, Alanis Morissette, looks amazing to say the least - I wouldn't even recognize her! In an OK! Magazine exclusive, Morissette shares her secrets for slimming down and losing up to 20 pounds in just a few months. Â
After eating a lot of processed foods, and feeling unhealthy, she turned to Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, which is a vegan diet (consuming fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts, and avoiding meat and dairy product).Â
Here's a small glimpse of the interview,
All the restrictions and limitations I’d placed upon myself for many years were let loose. I think it was a rite of passage for me. At 21, I was touring with Jagged Little Pill, so I didn’t experience the footloose and fancy-free passage that most people do in their teens and early 20s. My whole life I’ve been overly responsible. So I was fantastically indulgent for a good nine months. I knew it would be a temporary thing, and it was fun. There was a sexiness to my curvier self that I loved.
Free Scoop Of Baskin Robbins....
Friday, January 2nd, 2009 @ 10:43am
There's a catch!  Only those who can show a gym membership card on Jan. 15 will get a free scoop of ice cream. Why would Baskin Robbins promote such a thing?!...
Their latest addition of healthy choice ice cream called, BRight Choice, has been unveiled this January. These flavors are not accounted for as being health foods, but a healtier choice when consumed in the suggested serving size.Â
Lately any snack seems to have been shrunken into a 100 calorie pack, and now so has ice cream.
...the 90-calorie scoop of vanilla yogurt with 0 grams of fat seems like a pretty rational choice for a 2.5 ounce scoop, as does the 80 calorie strawberry sorbet. The 140-calorie raspberry chip and 130-calorie chocoloate are a little more dicey, but still something a lot of people could justify for an evening treat (be sure to ask if the cone count in the calories, because the BR press release is unclear).

Women Making Their Child(ren) Fat
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 @ 2:30pm
In a recent article from FemaleFirst, child obesity may be able to be prevented before birth. Â Susie Orbach, a leading food campaigner, has been trying to tackle child obesity in primary schools, suggesting that the problem starts with the mother.Â
"Mothers themselves are troubled by erratic eating, fear of food, preoccupation with body size, frequent dieting and bingeing"
She says that if women learn to control their own eating habits, they can set a better example for their children. However, mothers often use food as an incentive to reinforce good behaviour from children, and children tend to mirror the eating habits of their parents.
She added: “It shouldn’t surprise us that when children become independent eaters they reflect what they have learnt [from their mothers], not only in their eating choices, but in the emotional feelings of safety, anxiety, fear, pleasure or satisfaction that go with food."

Cut Cholesterol Sprinkle pistachios on your salad Researchers at Pennsylvania State University recently gave volunteers a pleasant task: Eat 1 1/2 ounces (about a handful) of pistachios every day.
