Poisonous Swimming Pools?
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 @ 3:37pm
Once thought of as an ideal activity for people who suffer from breathing problems, doctors and researchers are now considering the possibility that indoor swimming pools may be the cause of lung problems.
Last year the British Journal of Sports Medicine studied the lungs of 50 elite swimmers, the results showed that almost all of them had inflamed lung tissue. Other reports estimate that approximately one-third of top swimmers suffer from asthma.
Scientists believe that the chlorine, which can be lethal in high doses, when mixed with shredded skin or hair in the water (not very nice, I know), creates chloramines.
Chloramines are toxic and settle on the waters’ surface. When swimmers breathe in, the toxins are inhaled deep into the lungs. These pollutants have been shown to have a large impact on bronchial health.
Outdoor swimming pools do not appear to pose the same risk. Dr. Jim Miller, one of the USA Swimming teams’ physicians says that; “we hardly ever see problems among the swimmers at outdoor pools.”
The important thing is to be aware of any breathing problem you experience and to go to your doctor if you feel short of breath or experience tightness in the chest while in the pool, or even after you get out.
Don’t let this put you off swimming though! The overall benefits you get from swimming are greater than the risk of developing breathing problems. As Dr. Miller says,
Review: Amy's Veggie Burger
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 @ 3:28pm
I always love a good veggie burger, but those tend to be hard to find. I prefer ones that don't pretend to taste like meat, and enjoy mine to be filled with wholesome ingredients. When I'm in the mood for a big tasty veggie burger, the one that has easily become my favorite is, Amy's Kitchen's Quarter Pound Veggie Burger.
This is a huge burger and definitely fills me up and satisfies my tastebuds. On the Amy's Kitchen website, the description states:
"Amy's Quarter Pound Veggie Burger combines fresh organic grains and vegetables with protein-rich soybeans and a hint of barbeque sauce to create a firm, great tasting burger that's perfect for barbecuing or grilling."
To make this my perfect burger I spray with a thin layer of olive oil and throw it on my Foreman grill. I sautee some onions and add some bbq sauce and add it to the burger with a bun. It has a smokey bbq flavor and melts in your mouth.
One patty is 200 cals, has 3.5g of fat and contains 21g of protein! That is a protein packed patty that hits the spot every time. I've always been a fan of Amy's products, but lately this veggie burger has stolen my heart. It's a tasty, hearty burger that could even turn your biggest meat-lover into a veggie burger eater.
Taco Bell Chihuahua Says Adios
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 @ 1:18pm
Gidget, the tiny chihuahua who charmed millions through Taco Bell commercials, died of a stroke on Tuesday night at the ripe old age of 15. That is quite a life in dog years!
"She made so many people happy," says Gidget's trainer, Sue Chipperton, to People magazine.
That's right; despite her manly voiceover, the pint-sized pooch was a leading lady. No one said “Yo Quiero Taco Bell!" quite like "her" either!
Jamie Lee Curtis: 'I Too Found Painkillers'
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 @ 1:12pm
The account, as reported by People magazine, comes at an opportune time considering the recent controversy over Michael Jackson's death being a direct result of taking pain killers. And while Curtis will not disclose further information, her words still ring true:
"I too found painkillers after a routine cosmetic surgical procedure and I too became addicted," Curtis, 50, writes in a blog for The Huffington Post. "The morphine becomes the warm bath from which to escape painful reality. I was a lucky one. I was able to see that the pain had started long ago and far away and that the finding the narcotic was merely a matter of time."
See what she has to say about Michael Jackson.
Mischa Barton Health Update
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 @ 1:05pm
Mischa is "making improvements" and is "still seeking treatment," the actresses' rep told People magazine.
But die-hard Mischa Barton fans need not fear! She plans to return to work on July 31, when the CW show The Beautiful Life kicks off its production.
An unknown source says that Barton has been released from psychiatric hold at Cedars Sinai Hospital.
We're pulling for you, Mischa!
