Good Food, Good Exercise=Good Mind
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 @ 8:27am
According to four new studies that were presented this week at the Alzheimer's Association annual meeting in Vienna.
One of the four conducted by Heidi Wengreen, an assistant professor of nutrition at Utah State University, asked 3,831 adults, aged 65 and older, to complete a food survey. They then tested their cognitive skills over an 11-year period, beginning in 1995.
The researchers looked to see how well the participants followed the DASH diet, an eating regimen that protects against hypertension and heart trouble. Those who followed the DASH diet more closely had higher scores on the cognitive tests at the start of the study and over time, Wengreen found.
Pretty cool huh?! There's tons more to read up on - so do it here!

When Mid-Life Eating Disorders Strike
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 @ 8:22am
No one knows what exactly causes the onset but experts say they are treating an increasing number of women over 30 who are starving themselves, abusing laxatives, and exercising to dangerous extremes.
Gone are the days when such symptoms are reserved for adolescents and young teens.
Margie Hodgin, a nurse in Kernersville, N.C., knows this first-hand. It wasn’t until she turned 40 that she began her struggle
"It was a real sense of empowerment, that I can do this all on my own and no one is helping me, and I’m achieving what I want and fitting into my clothes better," she said to the New York Times of her initial delight in shedding the excess weight.
After several therapy sessions with her husband, things started to really sink in.
At a certain point,” she said, "you cross that line and you can’t help what you are doing, and the eating disorder owns you. I lost my bearings on reality and maturity."
Ms. Hodgin, who is now 45, credits her recovery in part to a trial at the University of North Carolina, where researchers are studying whether family therapy works as well for adults as it does for teenagers with the disorder. Bringing her husband to therapy sessions, she said, "made me realize how much I was breaking him down, and the resentment I had of people trying to make me better."

"Because you’re Bruce Jenner, Olympic champ [people s aid], 'Oh my gosh, you shouldn’t be doing things like that.' The media kind of went nuts on that stuff," Bruce said.
When asked why he underwent surgery, Bruce said he "was just going through a bad time."
A on-air family vote made the final decision for Bruce: he would undergo another round of surgery to correct his former procedures.

Although “healthy” isn’t the first thing you might think about convenience food, here a list of 11 quick and easy foods to grab on the go which are good if you’re pregnant (and even if you’re not!) and 5 you should steer clear of.
A spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Heidi Reichenberger and Elizabeth Somer, a registered dietician recommend these “fast” foods - here's some of the items out of the 11 on the list:
1. Soy milk. Available in 8-ounce servings of plain, chocolate, and vanilla flavor. Stash one in your purse or briefcase (they don't need to be refrigerated). One bottle can supply one-third of your daily calcium and vitamin D needs during pregnancy.2. Raisins. A 1-ounce box provides 2 grams of fiber, 4 percent of the daily recommended amount of iron, and even 1 gram of protein.
3. Easy-to-make trail mix. Mix a handful of shredded wheat-type cereal with a handful of dried cherries and almonds. Keep a zip-lock bag full in your desk or car for a handy, crunchy snack..
What Does Wendy Williams Have In Common With Oprah Winfrey & Tyra Banks?
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 @ 7:39am
Radio host Wendy Williams is returning to television with her show 'The Wendy Williams Show', which was back in syndication Monday (July 13) -- but that's not what Wendy has in common with Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks...
In an exclusive interview with The Advocate:
How will your daytime chat show compare to Oprah Winfrey’s and Tyra Banks’s shows? We’re all black, we all have beautiful smiles, we all battle our weight, and we’re all big women -- though I’m a little bigger than Tyra. And Tyra and I wear the same color wigs. Otherwise, there really isn’t much of a comparison. I love Tyra, but it’s generally a one-topic show, and my show consists of hot topics, advice, and one-on-one celebrity interviews. And Oprah has turned more informational first and then entertainment second. Last time I turned on Oprah, I got some really great information about self-body-checks.
So what should you expect from the self-proclaimed "Queen Of All Media" on her show, find out here.
