Bill Nighy Regrets Cigarettes
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 @ 12:03pm
Bill Nighy, known for his role as Davy Jones in 'The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End', says smoking is his "greatest regret". He admits his life has changed for the better since he kicked his 30-year habit, and would strongly advise others not to take it up. He said:
"One of the great regrets of my life is that I smoked. If I could say anything to anybody starting out in life it would be, 'Whatever you do, don't smoke'.
I have had to recover from that and been lucky that I have been able to stop."
When he first quit cigarettes, Bill replaced the habit with eating sweets but has now cut refined sugar from his diet and is feeling the benefits. He added to Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper:
"It's 72 days and counting. I hit sugar when I gave up cigarettes and binged my way off cigarettes on fruit gums, Lion bars and Magnums. I have no breaks in certain areas and I tend to gorge, so to be free of it is marvellous."
So what does his healthy lifestyle consist of?
"It also means I eat a lot of fruit, which I never used to. And it means I am properly hungry when I am meant to be. I don't snack. I sound so marvellous.
I don't have a strict regime but I do a bit of exercise and I try not to put things in my body that might hurt me."
True Or False: Urine Can Decipher Your Diet
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 @ 10:05am
This one may very well be true! Your next annual check-up could come accompanied by a simple $8 urine test to detect the quality of your diet.
Believe it or not, it is the level of potassium in your urine that correlates with nutrition in general, says Dr. Alexander Logan, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, who conducted the study.
"We can identify people who are eating a poor quality diet by a simple urine test and can recommend an intervention,"
Logan told HealthDay.com. Logan's team evaluated 24-hour urine samples from 220 people, ages 18 to 50, who were diagnosed with kidney stones.
The study's results showed that the participants with higher levels of potassium also yielded a higher recommended intake of healthy foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.
On the flip side, food reports of participants with lower potassium levels have showed they were likely to include more red meat, fast food and sugary, high-calorie drinks.
Logan and his fellow team members also plan to conduct the study on people with irritable bowel syndrome, a number of whom eat a poor diet.

Least Effective Exercises...With Alternatives
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 @ 6:44am
Standing Military Press:
This exercise demands extreme reliance on precision form. With exercises such as the standing press, the lower back is extremely vulnerable, as the natural inclination is to arch the back and allow the barbell to arc over the head.
Alternative: Sit and replace the barbell with two dumbbells. Not only does sitting protect the lower back, the dumbbells require your core muscles to work harder. You can also effectively perform this exercise while sitting at the Smith machine. (Images of Smith machine below)
