Black Henna Tattoo Chemical May Cause Skin Reaction

Black henna tattoos contain a chemical called para-phenylenediamine (PPD) that can cause serious skin reactions, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) warns. The popular black henna tattoos are sold everywhere from summer carnivals and open-air malls to vacation spots and cruise ships. PPD, commonly used for black hair dye, is added to natural henna in order to increase the intensity and longevity of the temporary tattoo. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration prohibits the direct application of PPD to the skin because of known health risks. However, lack of regulation of the tattoo industry means people are getting black henna tattoos and putting themselves at risk for serious skin problems.

"Perhaps the most alarming issue we are seeing with black henna tattoos is the increase in the number of children - ”even children as young as four - ”who are getting them and experiencing skin reactions," Dr. Sharon E. Jacob, assistant clinical professor of pediatrics and medicine (dermatology) at the University of California, San Diego, said in an AAD news release.

Gene Could Boost Stroke Risk For Migraine Sufferers

Scientists say they've spotted a gene that may lessen the risk of migraines with aura. However, the risk is still there, and if the person goes on to develop migraines with aura, this migraine-protective gene actually boosts their risk for stroke.

"There is a reduced association of migraine with aura with this gene, but if you have migraine with aura, the risk of stroke is magnified," said study senior author, Dr. Tobias Kurth, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Being Single Midlife Could Raise Your Risk For Demetia Later

If you are single and in your 40s, it might be a healthy idea to get hitched. A new Scandinavian study found unmarried middle-aged people are more likely to develop cognitive impairment than their partnered counterparts. But before you head to the chapel, consider a couple of caveats.

"One wonders if the association is the other way around," that those destined to have trouble thinking show symptoms decades before and therefore have trouble with relationships, said Dr. Sam Gandy, chairman of the Alzheimer's Association's National Medical and Scientific Advisory Council.

FDA Expands Pepper Warning In Salmonella Outbreak

U.S. health officials have widened their warning on peppers from Mexico after another salmonella-tainted sample, along with tainted irrigation water, was found at a second farm. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration now advises consumers to avoid all raw serrano peppers from Mexico, along with raw jalapenos from that country and all the foods that contain them, the agency announced late Wednesday night.

"Laboratory testing has confirmed that both a sample of serrano pepper and a sample of irrigation water collected by agency investigators on a farm in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, contain Salmonella saintpaul with the same genetic fingerprint as the strain of bacteria that is causing the current outbreak in the United States," the agency said in a news release.

Kendra Wilkinson Makes Staying In Shape Simple

Whether you love The Girls Next Door or you hate them, it really can't be denied that all three ladies have banging bodies...ESPECIALLY Kendra Wilkinson. And it seems like every episode she's in the gym or doing something active (yep, I watch, I'm a total sucker for bad reality TV). But, Kendra says, her amazing body comes from just keeping it simple.

This gal has seriously transformed her little bod from toned to super-toned. According to the starlet, results stem from doing "simple things like running and sit-ups" and drinking "lots and lots of carrot juice."
