Base Tans Are A Bad Idea
Monday, June 30th, 2008 @ 3:09pmIn case there was any doubt at all left in your mind, base tans are a bad idea! People think they should get a base tan so they won't get burned on vacation, but that's wrong. In fact, you're just doing yourself more damage.
A tan, Dr. William James, a professor of dermatology at Penn., said, represents nothing more than damage to the skin. It is the body trying to defend itself against an environmental hazard - ” too much UV light. In other words, indoor tanning gets you ready for the beach in the same way that getting scalded in a hot tub gets you ready to be boiled alive.
Eek, that will definitely make me think twice before I purposely sit in the sun working on my base!

Shop Online And Make Healthier Choices
Monday, June 30th, 2008 @ 2:36pmNo! I'm not talking about THAT kind of online shopping. Put the credit card down and back away from the pair of shoes on your screen.
I'm talking about online grocery shopping. It's a great alternative to going to the store, a. because it saves you time, and b. because new studies have shown that it may save you calories too.
"The study shows that individuals on weight loss plans who purchased their groceries from the online service bought 28 percent fewer high-fat foods than those who purchased items at their local supermarket."
Also,
"After eight weeks, researchers found that the people who used online grocery shopping reduced the number of high-fat foods in their homes by 38 percent, compared to 10 percent in the group using a weight loss program alone."
That makes sense since grocery stores are often diet traps, designed to make us purchase more.

Monday, June 30th, 2008 @ 2:19pm
This lady isn't a celebrity, but she should be! Jenny Masche gave birth to sextuplets, went into cardiac arrest during their birth and almost died, fully recovered to be able to take care of her babies, and then ran a marathon during the first year of their life.
Jenny said the key is that the babies are sound sleepers. When asked how she found the time to train, she replied,
"Because they're good sleepers," Jenny Masche told Meredith Vieira during an exclusive interview on TODAY Thursday in New York. "As soon as I put them down at 7 o'clock at night, I'd literally throw my running shoes on and my friend and I would go and run for like two hours."
Read the rest of her story here. I am so inspired! If this woman can find the time to train for a marathon while raising, not one, not two, but SIX children, I have absolutely no excuse for not making it to the gym.
Know Your Vitamins
Monday, June 30th, 2008 @ 1:21pm
Most Americans (67%, to be exact) think of themselves as knowledgeable about vitamins. But more than half of the women surveyed in a National Women's Health Resource Center study didn't know the basic benefit of four key nutrients--ones that millions consume daily in a simple multi. Know what you're taking and why: Here's a quick brush-up on vitamin facts that stumped the women most.
Vitamin A is essential to healthy vision. It helps transmit light signals in retinal cells.
Daily value: 5,000 IU. Four or five baby carrots easily provides this. Take a multivitamin that offers 100% of this amount.
Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption. They are often paired together in supplements for this reason.
Daily value: 400 IU of vitamin D; 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium. Most multivitamins contain this much vitamin D; a serving of fish or a few servings of dairy can get you enough.
Folic acid and calcium can help keep blood pressure normal. They aren't cure-alls for hypertension, but they have been shown to enhance the effects of a healthy diet.
Daily value: 400 mcg daily of folic acid (referred to as folate when naturally occurring in food); 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium. Find a multivitamin that offers 100% of folic acid. Take a calcium supplement that includes vitamin D, as described above.

A Vitamin A Day May Keep The Pounds Away
Monday, June 30th, 2008 @ 11:15am
Mommy always told you to take your vitamins as nutritional insurance, but following her advice may also help you lose weight. In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, women who regularly popped a multivitamin reported feeling less hungry and having less desire to eat than those who didn't. While the differences were fairly small, regular multi takers did weigh less and had a lower body fat percentage.
"Supplements can help you get enough of the micronutrients that control your appetite and the amount of calories you burn off each day," says Angelo Tremblay, Ph.D., the study's lead researcher and professor of physiology and nutrition at Canada's Laval University. "You're more likely to fall short on these essential vitamins and minerals when you're dieting."
When shopping for a daily vitamin, look for one that supplies 100 percent of the RDI, or recommended daily intake, of B vitamins (including folate) and vitamins C, D, and E; it should also have at least 200 milligrams of calcium and 18 milligrams of iron.
