Katie Cavuto: 'I'm Definitely A Everything In Moderation Type Of Girl'

I interviewed Katie Cavuto, a finalist on 'The Next Food Network Star', who was such a delight to talk to.
Cavuto, 30 (Philadelphia, Pa.), provides personal chef, cooking, and nutrition services through her self-started company, Healthy Bites. She developed her knowledge and passion for food at Johnson and Wales University and Tufts University where she also became a Registered Dietician. Cavuto brings a creative and competitive charm to the kitchen where she uses unprocessed, organic, farm-to-table ingredients to create simple and nutritious meals.
Nervous and excited to be a finalist on the show, she is someone who is truly passionate about what she does and in helping her clients achieve their goals.
"Their successes are my successes, and their failures are my failures."
Her passion for a healthy lifestyle has led her to the show, but what makes her stand out from the other finalists?
I think I'm really unique compared to the other finalists just from the fact that not only am I a chef, but a registered dietician - so the culinary point of view that I'm bringing to the show is what I like to call "green cuisine." It's all about eating healthy for both your body and the planet so a lot of focus on local, seasonal, organic fair - and I think that it truly makes me unique from some of the other chefs in the fact that their bringing more traditional culinary techniques to the table and obviously the use of "all that good stuff" like bacon, butter, cream, you know all that makes your mouth water. So I think both my culinary point of view and what I'm truly passionate about on a day-to-day basis is really timely right now, I think it's appropriate and I think it's really important.
Her culinary point-of-view isn't just an act for the show, it's really how she lives on a daily basis and what she teaches her clients. This can all be summed up in her program, Healthy Bites. Healthy Bites is a program that offers tools to learn how to live a long-term healthy lifestyle. The word "diet," is not used by Cavuto stating it has a negative connotation.
Services of the program include Cavuto going to a client's house and giving them a nutrition consultation, developing a personalized meal plan, going through their cabinets to determine what's staying and what's going, and then off to the grocery store where she will shop with her client in order to enforce a lof healthy behaviors and healthy eating techniques. She even teaches them how to cook healthier. She says:
"So their really learning how to take the practical knowledge and turn into hands on, you know, lifestyle techniques."
Her program even offers an organic meal delivery service for those on the go! All ingredients are organic, free of anitbotics, hormones and pesticides. And working with different clients from different income backgrounds, she tailors each program accordingly.
"You shouldn't have to pay a million dollars to learn these tools.
It's a real personalized service and that's what I pride myself on. As of right now, most of the services you'll get will be with me because I am so invested in my clients and their success. I have clients of all walks of life - different income, demographics, etc."
So I asked her what are a couple of basic nutrition tips she could give FitCeleb readers, and they are:
- Buy local. Buying local has a bunch of health benefits that we are most likely not aware of. Did you know that the shorter the distance from the farm to your place, the more nutrients its going to have? If food is traveling thousands of miles, the nutrients begin to deplete.
- When you look at your dinner plate, cut your plate in half - half veggies, quarter protein and quarter carbohydrates. Serving sizes are the most important thing when it comes to healthy eating.
If you think Cavuto is all health and no junk, think again. With her secret love of bacon (ok, well not really a secret anymore), she says:
"I'm definitely everything in moderation type of girl. Restricting all your favorite foods is not going to lead to a long-term healthy lifestyle, be forgiving with yourself."
With all these food products being stamped with organic, how could we really know if something is or isn't really organic? It has to be certified organic, which is government controlled.
"If your going to your local farmers market, a lot of the time it's not organic because unfortunately, it's very expensive for a farm to become certified organic, so a lot of these smaller local farms actually practice organic farming techniques but they don't have the money to actually get the certification."
Best thing for consumer? Ask questions. Really take control of your food and what you're eating. So basically if you can grow your own backyard garden, it would be best. It's the shortest distance from plant to plate, and a whole lot cheaper too!
Who would she like to share her kitchen with? Jamie Oliver and her grandfather. Her beloved grandfather had an amazing garden that she recently found out was 100% organic. She wish she could bring him back just for one day and absorb all of his knowledge since she was too young to appreciate it at the time.
Who does she think of as a Fit Celeb? After taking a few seconds to think...Cameron Diaz was her answer - but she thinks a lot of these celebrities are following crazy diets.
"The thing that frustrates me with them is that their following these fad diets, and just quick weight loss tricks instead of really living a healthy lifestyle and trying to make it long-term instead of just trying to get that red carpet body."
So what have we learned from Katie? Fresh is best when it comes to food, and we should go back to, farm to table meals - rather than packaged, processed to frozen dinner meals.
