Cruise With Confidence: How-To-Eat Better On The Road

It's summer time, which might mean planning a road trip! But before you load up on a bunch of sugary snacks and stop at fast food joints to refuel along the way, try these helpful tips from Real Simple.
1.) Stick to your meal schedule. You may be stuck in the car but that doesn't mean you're confined to it! For instance, if you're used to noshing down on lunch at 12:30, pack a lunch for yourself or stop at a healthier fare like Subway.
2.) Get out of the car to eat. If you pack your own lunch, rely on a park bench or rest stop area. When you sit down, you're forced to practice mindful eating by slowly taking in each bite. Not only will your stiff leg muscles thank you for the stretch but your senses will be greatful too!
3.) Control portions and choose wisely. If you happen to stop at a fast food joint, order from the children's menu. It costs the chains only pennies to supersize a meal, but larger portions are no health bargain. Substitute milk, juice, or diet soda for a regular soda and add a salad whenever possible; avoid gloppy dressings.
4.) Eat with a fork and a spoon. This also aids in being mindful because utensils force you to slow down while eating. Plus, you can't go to town on salad or chunky soup with your hands!
5.) Travel with water. This one's a biggie! Not only can you confuse hungry with dehydration, but air-conditioning in cars is often dehydrating. Pack fruits and vegetables too and don't use food to occupy yourself or bored children. If they do get hungry, have fruit and crackers on hand.
