Nutrition: Snack Away To Healthy Skin
Desperate to have skin like Marcia Cross? Well, who wouldn’t! So here’s the scoop on five snacks that help your skin and maintain your health. Keep your tummy happy by snackin on these “derm-adored bites”.
- Eggs-”Protein promotes the growth of collagen, which builds skin’s resilience” as stated by Tammy Lakatos Shames, R.D. A hard-boiled egg fulfills 10 percent of your daily protein needs.
- Nuts-”Walnuts and pistachios are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help skin make natural oils and absorb water from the air” says Kenneth Beer, M.D. For a 100-calorie hunger halter, have 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw nuts (no high-sodium such as roasted peanuts)
- Dark Chocolate-Polyphenols, the antioxidants in cocoa, protect against collagen-damaging free radicals. According to Dr. Beer, the more antioxidants you ingest, the healthier skin will look. Dark chocolate is higher in antioxidants and lower in calories than milk chocolate. Limit your intake to 100 Calories (3 Dark Hershey’s Kisses)
- Strawberries and Blueberries-Berries are packed with Vitamin C, skin’s chief antioxidant. To fight skin-cancer-causing free radicals, thaw organic frozen berries until they’re slushy, then stir them into nonfat yogurt. Aim for 3/4 of a cup per day.
- Sweet Potatoes-These tasty carbohydrates deliver vitamin A, which counteracts dullness by encouraging skin to shed old cells and grow new ones. Pop a fork-poked potato in the microwave for five minutes (flip halfway through) and sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg or pumpkin-pie spice.
Now you can kill two birds with one stone: eat healthy and help your skin!
